Water Tower
The City of Decatur's Water Works is responsible for providing safe and reliable drinking water for the residents and businesses of Decatur. The water supply comes from ground water via four wells in Decatur and two wells in Berne. The Decatur wells supply water to the plant located on E 600 N. The Berne wells supply water to the plant located on Winchester Street. The two plants have a combined daily capacity of between 3 and 3.5 million gallons of water a day. The city utilizes three water towers for storage, each with a maximum capacity of 500,000 gallons. These towers are located on north 5th Street, Line Street, and Piqua Road. The distribution system consists of approximately 58 miles of water mains. Water Department staff continuously monitors the treated water supply throughout the distribution system. Chemical tests are run daily to allow for appropriate adjustments to the treatment process. Bacteriological tests are run weekly to ensure that the water is safe for consumption. All monitoring is done in compliance with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in accordance with the Safe Drinking Water Act.
