Board of Public Works & Safety

Board of Public Works & Safety

Each city must have a Board of Works and Safety as established by Indiana Code (IC 36-4-9-7). In the Third Class City, the Board of Works and Safety consists of three members, one of whom is the mayor. The remaining two members are appointed. Board Members must be residents of the County, but may hold other municipal appointed or elected offices. The Clerk-Treasurer is the Clerk of the Board.

The public safety function of the Board includes law enforcement and fire protection. The public works function of the Board includes control over streets, sanitation, transportation, sewers, and city utilities.

The Board of Public Works & Safety meets every first and third Tuesday of each month at 6:00 P.M. in the Council Chambers at City Hall.
